The Anton Bruckner Private University is one of only five world-renowned music universities in Austria named after the musician Anton Bruckner, and is also the oldest music and arts institution in Austria. ABPU was founded in 1799 by the musician Franz Xaver Gloeggl (1764-1839). Franz Xaver Gloeggl was a close friend of the musicians Beethoven, Mozart, and Anton Bruckner. He dedicated his life to the promotion of music and art, and in 1799 founded the Linz Conservatory, later renamed the Anton Bruckner Conservatory. In 2004, it was officially renamed the “Anton Bruckner Private University”. As early as 1896, the school already had over 500 students. The then-principal was the renowned pianist, composer, and conductor August Goellerich, who studied under the famous Austrian composer and music historian Wilhelm Jerger. The current principal is Ursula Brandstätter, a renowned Austrian music theorist, educator, and professor at the Berlin University of the Arts.
ABPU adheres to the long-established Western arts education system, implementing a unified European teaching model and examination evaluation system for its programs. Entrance examinations are held annually in September at Bruckner University’s main campus. To ensure fairness and authority in the admissions process, like the other four Austrian public music universities, ABPU never holds entrance examinations outside its own campus. Students complete four years (eight semesters) for undergraduate studies and two years (four semesters) for master’s studies; the music education undergraduate program is five years (ten semesters). Graduation examinations consist of three parts: internal preliminary review, public recital, and thesis defense. All graduation theses are entered into the European Dissertation Search System and assigned a unique code for verification. Upon successful completion of the examinations, a degree certificate is awarded.
